Week 3: The Painting Game Landscape Paintings Students recalled places they have traveled, places they live and invented places that exist in games or their imaginations. They recreated these places from memory/invention on the paper. Students were enthusiastic about what they included in their paintings and were more than willing to share with instructors and peers. Students dove right into painting, quickly following any tips about technique as I went. Students were excited to share what they were working on. As they began painting I could assess their skills (all of them had said they painted before) and called out some tips. I reminded them to dip their brush in water to start, dip in water and brush off the paint on scrap paper to change colors and asked if they knew what colors to mix for purple, or to make things lighter etc. I visited with each student more individually during work time to continue to ask and answer any questions. Using one of the tools (comb, spatula, knife, stick etc.) to swirl or spread dots of color throughout. Play around with design and shapes! Lightly press paper down on top of shaving cream + color and pull away. Set the paper to the side for 2-3 minutes. My results on a whole were mostly a surprise. I found that the less I liked what my shaving cream color design looked like, the more interesting my paper turned out. Color and Design Results I also found that both food coloring and acrylic paints were effective for providing vibrant colors. An effective process for creating different colors and designs for me was starting with one color, then adding one or two for each new paper pull going forward. When I fulfilled a color scheme, I sprayed a new layer of shaving cream to begin a new set of colors and designs. I appreciated the different results from each of the tools we used- the skinny kabob stick made for a distinct, vibrant design while the spatula and knife created thicker lines and spots of color. Paper Cardstock and poster paper worked best for solid and vibrant results. White printer paper also worked well. I did not like the way colored paper turned out. I had so much fun because this was experimental, colorful and a tactile experience- all appealing to elementary students. Shaving cream is relatively safe and clean, I would just be aware of any sensitivities to scent and possibly keep one scent free option on hand. This is a messy yet inexpensive project. While trays are ideal, this can be done directly on a table. Any daily use tools are usable for mixing color and scraping shaving cream. Shaving cream is the only expense, and a little can go a long way? Maybe I have some things to learn about how crazy kids go on things that come out of aerosol cans though… Another perk to shaving cream marbling, like with other decorative paper techniques, is that it can be the base for another project. Marbled paper could be cut up for collage, serve as the cover of student made books, journals or folders. Skim the water surface with a folded sheet of newsprint (goal is to get dust off). Fill color palette with desired colors. Mix colors together if desired! Dip one brush tip into ink color of choice, and the other brush tip into another color (black increases definition of the shapes). Tap the one brush to the surface, then the other brush. Alternate until desired shape/appearance occurs. There should be a design of concentric circles, shifting gradually. When the design looks appealing, dip the paper, front down, onto the surface of the water. Lightly tap so the entire surface of the paper touches the water. Peel the paper up, then dry off on a stack of flat paper towels or rinse paper in water. Set the paper to the side to dry. Additional Design Options Add alcohol for a chemical reaction that alters the shape interestingly. Use a needle or safety pin to draw lines in the circles. Styrofoam is a relatively less expensive material, a lot can go a long way, and most classrooms are stocked with paints that can be used. The etching and carving aspect of this technique presents two positive learning opportunities. 1) Practicing this method of drawing on styrofoam is a good introduction to print making, and a great jumping off point for woodcut and linocut print making. 2) Etching for prints results in the inverse result, which is challenging for some students to wrap their mind around. Practicing this method teaches students how to plan designs that flip left to right and inverse how the color/outlines are. One final note about this activity for younger students: It can be quite messy and both acrylic and printing paints do stain so coverings are recommended over clothing and table surfaces. Experimentation could be done with watercolor or tempura paints that are much more washable. Using a brush, cover one cardboard piece with glue. Apply the tissue paper. Let the tissue paper extend 1/2 - 1” past the cardboard. The style is artist choice, you can wrinkle the tissue paper or apply it smooth. For a shiny, shellacked look, paint glue over the tissue paper. Set aside to dry. Once the cover is dry, turn it over. Fold the extended tissue paper around the cover and apply glue over the tissue. Cut two pieces or regular paper, slightly smaller than the cover. Use awl to poke holes. Thread the needle with thread five times the height of the book cover.
